Beyond the Trends: Why Your Home Should Tell a Story, Not Follow a Fad
Principle bedroom designed by The Layered Look Interiors
We’ve all seen them: the perfectly staged, "cookie-cutter" rooms that look like they’ve been lifted straight from a magazine. While they might look beautiful in a photograph, they often lack one vital ingredient: soul.
In a world of fast furniture and fleeting "aesthetic" trends, it’s easy to feel pressured to decorate for the "now." But I’ve always believed that the most beautiful English homes aren't the ones that follow the rules. They are the ones that tell a story.
A Philosophy Rooted in Family
My love for a home that evolves over time comes from a very personal place. My late mother was, by far, my biggest inspiration. She didn't just decorate a house; she built a family home that was a living, breathing collection of our lives.
Watching her curate her collection and seeing how our home grew alongside us formed the foundations of all my happy childhood memories. Her belief that a home should be a reflection of the people within it is now what guides me in my career. I feel so strongly about this because I have seen first-hand how a soulful, layered environment can shape the way we feel and the memories we make.
The "Forever Home" Fallacy
One of the things I hear most often is: "I’ll buy that beautiful piece of art or that antique sideboard when I’m in my forever home."
My advice? Don’t wait. A home shouldn't be a destination you reach only when you’ve found the "final" property. It is an evolving collection of your life and your travels. If you love a piece of furniture, it will find its place in your life, whether you’re in a city flat or a countryside cottage. When you curate a collection of items you truly love, they become the thread that connects every home you ever live in.
Finding Harmony in the Choice
Many of my clients already have the ingredients for a beautiful home. They have a collection of pieces they adore, or perhaps one "hero" item, such as a vibrant rug, a family heirloom, or a bold piece of art, that they want to build a whole room around.
However, this is often where a sense of overwhelm can creep in. When you have a piece you love, the infinite choices of paint colours, fabric swatches, and layouts can feel quite paralysing. You know how you want the room to feel, but finding the path to get there can feel a little cluttered.
This is where the gentle guidance of a designer can be so helpful. It isn’t about someone coming in and changing your style. Instead, it is about having a creative partner to help you filter the noise. By understanding your personality and how you actually live in your space, I can help ensure those hero pieces are celebrated and that every new layer feels intentional and right for you.
Bringing the Story to Life
If your furniture is the "bones" of your story, then your finishes are the "chapters." This is how we build the Layered Look in a way that feels effortless:
* The Power of Colour and Pattern: Don’t be afraid to mix a heritage floral with a modern geometric. This juxtaposition is what gives British interiors that effortless, lived-in charm.
* Texture Underfoot and Overhead: From the weave of a wool rug to the tactile finish of a linen curtain, texture is what turns a house into a sanctuary.
* Paint as a Backdrop: Use paint not just to cover walls, but to set the mood for the pieces you’ve collected over the years.
Interior Design is an Evolution
Interior design isn’t about reaching a "finished" state where nothing can ever be moved. It’s about creating a space that grows with you. It’s about the vintage vase you found on a weekend away, the armchair you inherited and reupholstered in a bold contemporary fabric, and the art that makes you smile every time you walk past.
When we stop decorating for "perfection" and start decorating for "connection," magic happens. Your home stops looking like a trend and starts looking like you.
Let’s Start Your Story
Are you ready to stop waiting for the "perfect time" and start building a home that reflects who you are? Whether you have a single piece you love and don't know where to start, or you are simply looking for a little help to pull your ideas together, I’d love to help you find your layers.
